From Chance Encounter to Life-Changing Rhythm: Josy's Story

Hi my name is Josy and I'm from Germany. Sometimes the best adventures are the ones you don’t plan. While traveling along the north coast of the Dominican Republic, I accidentally stumbled upon a student concert at Voyvoy. As a music student myself, I was immediately struck—not just by the talent, but by the incredible autonomy and confidence of the students on stage.

I had originally planned to join a program in Haiti, but when that path closed, a new door opened. I saw that the Academy had mastered exactly what I wanted to learn: how to teach music through a practical, hands-on approach that gets students playing right away.

Stepping Into the Music

I arrived with a lot of passion but zero Spanish. However, music is a universal language. I dove in headfirst, supporting the children’s choir and assisting Demmanuel in his music theory classes. My days quickly became a beautiful blur of melody and mentorship:

  • Teaching: I gave piano lessons and practiced guitar improvisation with students.

  • Mentoring: I had the privilege of helping Raylin prepare for his journey to Berklee College of Music in the States.

  • Supporting: From accompanying live concerts to creating social media content, I jumped in wherever I was needed.

What I Carried Home

My time at the Academy wasn't just about what I could give; it was about what I received. I was introduced to vibrant new rhythms and instruments I had never touched before. More importantly, I walked away with a new philosophy on education:

"I learned that you engage children not through dense theory, but through the 'trial and error' of playing familiar songs. I saw how young adults grow when they are empowered to teach those younger than them—regardless of their own level."

The Academy is more than a school; it’s a dynamic community where everyone is a student and everyone is a teacher. Seeing the students take ownership of their craft was the most rewarding "accident" of my travels.

Inspired by this story? Whether you have a musical skill to share or want to support a student’s journey to the world stage, there is a place for you here.
